need help with guitar problem

i just recently received a electric guitar and amp as a early christmas gift, its my first electric, so i dont know much about them, but i seem to be having problems with it, both guitar and amp are suposably decent, coming from good brands. the problem is when i try to play on clean or acoustic, it doesnt sound very clean, you can barley hear the high e and when playing songs like be like that (3 doors down) all the notes get mushed together in a ugly cheap distortion sound. i think it may be the cable since its really cheap but could that be the problem.
my equipment is a Dean vendetta XM
and a roland micro cube
thanx

I'd try taking it to a place that sells guitars and see what they say.
