First Guitar [acoustic or electric]

First Guitar [acoustic or electric]

Hey guys, I'm interested in learning guitar. I've been wanting to learn guitar ever since I can remember. I love music by the Chili Peppers, Pink Floyd, The Doors, Beatles, The Mars Volta, Led Zepp, etc. Basically, I love oldies and I love rock in general. Since it was recently my birthday, I took the plunge and asked for a guitar. Now, keep in mind that we had a steady budget (Since it was going to be my first guitar, I didn't want to spend much, seeing as how there was a possibility I may not have liked the instrument all that much, or simply may not have caught on). Now I set a budget of 150$ and took a trip down to guitarcenter. I ended up getting a Yamaha starter kit (http://www.guitarcenter.com/shop/pro..._sku=102920113) and I've started playing with it a bit. I've had it for a week now, but I constantly look up cover songs and tabs, and notice most songs I enjoy are played on an electric.

At this point I'm seriously deliberating trading in my acoustic for an electric, would this be a good move on my part? I really want to make a commitment and learn guitar, and I'm willing to take the time and learn. But I also want to play the sort of music I enjoy, and although many of the bands I like play acoustic, I can't help but notice that the guitar crowd now-a-days is mostly Electric. Many friends have told me that most of the stuff you can play on an electric can also be played on an acoustic, but I'm not entirely sure it'll sound the same. Or feel the same. It seems alot tougher to play a riff or a solo on an acoustic, compared to an electric (I've been looking up cover videos on youtube :P). So, what do you guys think? Should I trade in my Acoustic starter kit for an electric? Keep in mind, this is going to be my first guitar I've ever owned/played. I know nothing about guitars. And if you guys DO reccomend I trade in my acoustic for an electric, keep in mind I can't go over 150$ for the entire setup (amp, guitar, etc.), it just wouldn't be fair to my parents to break the budget I promised them.

That's why I was thinking of something along the lines of a nice starter kit, something like the acoustic starter kit i currently own(which includes the guitar, gigbag, picks, extra strings, tuner, and instructional dvd ie. see link above). Keep in mind, I can't order this setup online. I know I'm probably being really picky, but my parents set the rules here, and I have to respect them. However I do have a variety of local stores nearby, including guitarcenter, samash, walmart, circuit city, etc. So, if possible, or if you guys decide to reccomend some equipment, please keep in mind that I can't order online, and please keep in mind the local stores I have nearby. Thanks!

It might be a good idea to start with the acoustic and if you feel you are getting somewhere with it then get an electric also,by that i mean have both.

Possibly an electric/acoustic may be the way to go.From what i have read in articles starter packs aren't the best thing to buy, maybe spending your budget on a good acoustic alone could be something to think about and get the other things seperately at a later date.

Although i might be completely wrong at least its something to think about.

Hope this was useful.

If you are looking for a good starter pack(electric)...the one I got was from target. Its a fender starcaster, the pack comes with an amp, softcover bag, extra strings, a tuner, and of course the guitar itself. This is great for me right now because i am beginning and also have an acoustic. I dont have the exact link, its in stores, you can also search Welcome to Target

hope this helps

I started out with, and still prefer to play, an acoustic, after a while struggling with barre chords i bought an electric and it is much easier to play barre chords on.
I think it depends on what you want to play, i like folk,so the acoustic is best for what i like to play, it sounds to me with your musical interest an electric would be better, but thats just my opinion, in the end it's up to you.

Agree with you there mate.

If your going for an acoustic get a Yamaha. Got a mate with an Yamaha F310 (£79 on gak), ive played a few in a similar price range (staggs etc) and the Yamaha tops them. For an extra £20 you can pick up an Yamaha F370.

Ive got an epiphone les paul standard which I rarely play anymore, just my humming bird knock off by Yamaha from the mid 70s. Ive read Gibson even filed a law suit against Yamaha over their knock off's.

Make sure you pick up a cheapo electric tuner as well.

Edit: replying to a post from 2006

Buy Epiphone Les Paul Jr. Electric Guitar Player s Pack at Guitar Center
Buy B.C. Rich Bronze Warlock Custom Electric Guitar Pack at guitarcenter.com

I'd say [You can look at my before u buy a guitar lesson]

Umm, since i wrote that lesson, I think you should burn the packs.
I'm pretty sure these guitars will suit you well....
a Les Paul or a Fender Stratocaster.
Gibson is great if you have the $$$ They can get super pricey.
Fenders are so-so. They are pretty affordable.
The necks are shit, [bolt-on] but unless you have tiny hands like I do, it shouldn't bother you much.
The red hot chili peppers guitarist uses a strat.
Jimmy page of led zepplin has a signiture les paul somewhere.

and plus, you like oldies.
Those two brands were HUGE back then!

But you should always pick it up before you buy it.
Don't rely on another kid to do it for you lol (Yeah, Im 13)
Have funn!

well...acoustics are harder to play, so if you stuck with your acoustic and got good at it just imagine how well you'd be able to play on an electric,
or you could go and return your acoustic and buy one of those electric started kits and jam on that, and then if you find you like playing guitar, save up and buy a better guitar/ amp and such.
i would personally go buy one of those electric guitar starter kits..

...And happy birthday dude
