question about [notes] in brackets

hey, what does it mean when a note is in a bracket

-----[3]-------------[3]
--0------0--0--0--0------0--0

i've seen it loads and i've just played it. something is tellin me it means its optional... but on tabs i'm guessin it wouldnt be there if a song didnt include it?

Correct me if i'm wrong...just telling as my idea for it

Its called a ghost note. You dont hit the note,just position ur finger on tht note during tht moment.
Since if u just land ur finger on the note without hittin it...it will still sound
