Since it was recently my birthday, I took the plunge and asked for a guitar. Now, keep in mind that we had a steady budget (Since it was going to be my first guitar, I didn't want to spend much, seeing as how there was a possibility I may not have liked the instrument all that much, or simply may not have caught on). Now I set a budget of 150$ and took a trip down to guitarcenter. I ended up getting a Yamaha starter kit (Buy Yamaha GigMaker Guitar Pack online at Guitar Center) and I've started playing with it a bit. I've had it for a week now, but I constantly look up cover songs and tabs, and notice most songs I enjoy are played on an electric.

At this point I'm seriously deliberating trading in my acoustic for an electric, would this be a good move on my part? I really want to make a commitment and learn guitar, and I'm willing to take the time and learn. But I also want to play the sort of music I enjoy, and although many of the bands I like play acoustic, I can't help but notice that the guitar crowd now-a-days is mostly Electric. Many friends have told me that most of the stuff you can play on an electric can also be played on an acoustic, but I'm not entirely sure it'll sound the same. Or feel the same. It seems alot tougher to play a riff or a solo on an acoustic, compared to an electric (I've been looking up cover videos on youtube :P). So, what do you guys think? Should I trade in my Acoustic starter kit for an electric? Keep in mind, this is going to be my first guitar I've ever owned/played. I know nothing about guitars. And if you guys DO reccomend I trade in my acoustic for an electric, keep in mind I can't go over 150$ for the entire setup (amp, guitar, etc.), it just wouldn't be fair to my parents to break the budget I promised them.

That's why I was thinking of something along the lines of a nice starter kit, something like the acoustic starter kit i currently own(which includes the guitar, gigbag, picks, extra strings, tuner, and instructional dvd ie. see link above). Keep in mind, I can't order this setup online. I know I'm probably being really picky, but my parents set the rules here, and I have to respect them. However I do have a variety of local stores nearby, including guitarcenter, samash, walmart, circuit city, etc. So, if possible, or if you guys decide to reccomend some equipment, please keep in mind that I can't order online, and please keep in mind the local stores I have nearby. Thanks!

edit- Found a few starter kits for electrics, what do you guys think?

Umm, since i wrote that lesson, I think you should burn the packs.
I'm pretty sure these guitars will suit you well....
a Les Paul or a Fender Stratocaster.
Gibson is great if you have the $$$ They can get super pricey.
Fenders are so-so. They are pretty affordable.
The necks are shit, [bolt-on] but unless you have tiny hands like I do, it shouldn't bother you much.
The red hot chili peppers guitarist uses a strat.
Jimmy page of led zepplin has a signiture les paul somewhere.

and plus, you like oldies.
Those two brands were HUGE back then!

But you should always pick it up before you buy it.
Don't rely on another kid to do it for you lol (Yeah, Im 13)
Have funn!
